Neptune; the 8th and furthest planet from the Sun. The planet is still no less interesting, being seven times larger than Earth with 1,200mph winds and diamonds everywhere, Neptune would definitely be worth another visit. Neptune’s atmosphere consists of Hydrogen, Helium and Methane. The Methane in the upper atmosphere absorbs the red light from the Sun, but it reflects the blue light back into space which is why Neptune appears blue to our eyes.
This colour photograph was taken by Voyager 2 on it’s approach to the gas giant on August 16th and 17th, 1989, during which Voyager 2’s narrow-angle camera almost continuously photographed Neptune.
